WFFM actions
The heart of WFFM’s action is to promote cooperation and exchange of experiences among Friends of Museums worldwide.
WFFM:
-
Organizes the exchange of information and the sharing of best practices and experiences at its annual General Assembly and triennial International Congress.
-
Promotes the idea of Friends of Museums and their work through its international networks
-
Encourages the formation of new national associations and federations of friends of museums around the world
-
Encourages links between museum professionals and volunteers, young people and the public, in the belief that our objectives can be achieved through the active participation of the community at large.
WFFM develops:
- International and regional cooperation with organizations working in the same field as Friends of Museums, the first being ICOM, the International Council of Museums, which has recognized the WFFM as an ICOM Affiliate.
- The annual European Day of the Friends of Museums under the common motto “Your Museums, Our Passion!” to celebrate the Friends of Museums and to raise their profile in their community, working towards the internationalization of this day.
- The Young Friend project, which involves the 18-35 age group in associations and federations of friends of museums, based on the experience of WFFM members, Young Friends and the Verona 2017 Charter they have drawn up, in order to promote intergenerational relations.

WFFM Organization
The World Federation of Friends of Museums (WFFM) is an international, non-profit, non-governmental organization founded in Belgium in 1975 to promote cooperation among Friends of Museums associations throughout the world.
The members of the WFFM are federations or associations of friends of museums, individuals and donors.
The governing bodies are the General Assembly, the Council and the Executive Committee.
The General Assembly, which brings together representatives of the National Federations, Associate Members and Individual Members, adopts new policies, elects Council members, and approves the budget and accounts.
The Council is the managing body of the WFFM with representatives from the Federations and Associations, with the contribution of the Young Council.
The Executive Committee, elected by the Council, is responsible for the day-to-day management of all affairs. It consists of a President, Vice Presidents for each region, a Secretary General and a Treasurer.
The WFFM holds its annual General Assembly and its triennial Congress in different cities of the world each year.

The Welcome team in Paris is ready!
Our Paris office reopened in the 19th arrondissement to welcome you: to meet, exchange views, or just have a cup of coffee or tea, when World Federation members traveling in Europe make a stopover in Paris and wish to meet. A place also to archive new documents or to delve into the history of WFFM.
The WFFM head office is in Bruxelles, in the middle of the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique.

WFFM values
We support museums by preserving and promoting our cultural heritage as a unified community of friends
Our initiatives go far beyond the mere preservation of cultural heritage, helping to transform museums into lively, accessible places that meet the needs and expectations of today’s visitors.
Our involvement is a voluntary and democratic expression of solidarity that actively engages our role as citizens in the community.
Sharing the values of the museums we support, we act as cultural transmitters, aiming to build and maintain bridges between museums and civil society in all its diversity. We seek to respond to the evolving cultural aspirations of society.
Through the work of volunteers, we contribute to the outreach of our museums in synergy with them and their governing bodies at the local, regional, national and international levels, in compliance with the requirements and regulations of the institution.
Our commitment provides moral and long-term support to the museum teams.
By adapting to the specificities of our museums, we contribute not only to their promotion but also to their cultural development, in particular by enriching their collections.
One of our most important commitments is to make culture accessible to all. We play an active role in building links between museums and communities, contributing to cultural education and intercultural dialogue.
We believe that together we can face the challenges of protecting and developing the cultural assets that are inherent to our identity by spreading knowledge and preserving our cultural heritage intact for future generations.

Member of Icom
International Council of Museums
We are affiliated members of ICOM and respect the Code of ethics of ICOM.
The WFFM’s creation was impulsed by ICOM in 1975. ICOM had developed the guidelines of a new transnational organization entitled to become a creditable counterpart of museum institutions and of their managing agencies, open to diverse operative experiences and to the needs of different cultures.
The WFFM and ICOM :
– cooperate in the fields of educational activities in museums, outreach to the public and safeguarding of cultural heritage
– act through exchanges of best practices and information, joint projects, studies, exchanges, visits, seminars, workshops and dialogue
– exchange documents and information in areas of mutual interest and keep abreast of developments in these areas.
